Wireless Spacecraft Bus-A RF-based Data Communication Architecture
We propose to develop a RF-based intra-spacecraft inter-network to harness data communication onboard spacecraft, and develop empirical knowledge of design requirements and performance of wireless systems in the space environment. This will be accomplished through laboratory testing and flight demonstration/data gathering.Particularly, the objectives of our project are as follows:
-
Design an open system architecture that facilitate the intra- and inter communications of wireless sensor networks (WSN) and wireless local area networks (WLAN) and design a set of Telemetry/Telecomm and (TM/TC) data handling networking protocols in the heterogeneous wireless environments.
-
Characterize of the radio frequency, space electromagnetic and instrumentation noise that should be simulated in a ground-based mock spacecraft environment and establish the traffic models that characterize the intra-spacecraft applications.
-
Build an analytical model to quantify the effect of the mutual interference of WSN and WPAN. Simulations and experiments will be conducted to verify the analytical model, and provide more insights.
-
To enable a high performance, the deployment of WSN and WLAN will be carefully investigated. Policies will be designed to prevent performance degradation due to the mutual interference.
-
Investigate the efficient mechanisms to enhance network security and fault tolerance
