ECE Assessment Plan

The electrical engineering program assessment planning is done by the department's undergraduate programs and assessment committee. The committee is responsible for approving any changes in the curriculum and program assessment. The committee consists of at least one member from our three broad specialties: Physical Electronics, Systems, and Computer Engineering. The committee is usually chaired by the Chief Departmental Advisor. The program educational objectives describe the expected accomplishments of graduates during the first few years after graduation. The program outcomes are statements that describe what students are expected to know and be able to do by the time of graduation. The original programs objectives and outcomes were developed in October 2000 with input from all the significant constituents particularly faculty, alumni, and the industrial advisory board. The program outcomes were established based on the program educational objectives. They encompass the outcome requirements of Criterion 3 of ABET Criteria for Accrediting Engineering Programs.

The undergraduate committee with input from the faculty developed a list of course coordinators.Since different instructors including adjuncts and graduate students may teach a course, the coordinator oversees any changes or updates to maintain continuity.

Methods used to evaluate student achievement of the expected program outcomes are

  • Course evaluations
  • Senior Exit Interviews
  • EIT exam results
  • IAB report

A college wide approach of assessing about half the outcomes one year and the remaining outcomes the following year was adopted by the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the assessment plan leading up to the ABET visit in 2009 is shown in Table 1. By the time of the ABET visit we will have each outcome assessed at least twice. The staggering will allow us to implement the required changes and allow enough time for the changes to take effect before the next assessment.
