Dr. Hani E. Elsayed-Ali
Ph.D., University of Illinois-Urbana. Ultrafast laser-based measurements, ultrafast electron diffraction, laser processing, thin film deposition, semiconductor surface preparation and characterization, electron emitters and electron gun design.
Received his BS degree from the University of Miami in Dec. 1979, his MS and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Illinois, Urbana in Jan. 1982 and Jan. 1985, respectively, all in electrical engineering. Upon graduation, he worked as a visiting assistant professor at the University of Illinois conducting research in the areas of gas discharges and thin film deposition. In December 1985, he joined the Laboratory for Laser Energetics at the University of Rochester as a scientist. At Rochester he worked on ultrafast laser probing of electronic and structural properties of material surfaces and thin films. He joined Old Dominion University in December 1992 and he is currently a professor and eminent scholar of electrical engineering. His current research interests are mainly in ultrafast laser probing of surface and thin film reactions, thin film deposition, and laser multicharged ion sources. He authored and co-authored over 100 refereed journal articles and holds 2 patents. He is the recipient of the ODU 16th Annual Faculty Research Award, 2000; the College and Departmental Excellence in Research Award, 2000; Excellence in Innovation in Hampton Roads Award, Hampton Roads Technology Council (HRTC), 2006; the College and Departmental Excellence in Industrial Partnering Award, 2008; the Departmental Excellence in Research Award, 2010; the College Excellence in Advising Award, 2012; the ODU Doctoral Mentoring Award, 2012.
