Dr. Khan M. Iftekharuddin

Professor and Chair

Director, Vision Lab

Ph.D., Univeristy of Dayton, Dayton, OH

Dr. Iftekharuddin obtained his B.Sc. degree from Bangladesh Institute of Technology in 1989. He received an M.S. and a Ph.D. both in electrical engineering from the University of Dayton in 1991 and 1995 respectively.

Dr. Iftekharuddin was a principal research engineer at Timken Research, Canton, OH before joining to NDSU. There he was involved in research in signal and image processing, neural networks applications, time-frequency analysis, sensors and embedded system design. Prior to Timken, Dr. Iftekharuddin was a senior systems engineer at BDM Federal in Dayton, OH. There he was involved in software development, software process improvement, and automatic target recognition (ATR) research.

He is named the Researcher of the Year in college of Engineering and Architecture for 2000 at NDSU. Much of his research had focused on different aspects of computer vision and signal/image processing problems. He is the principal author of more than ninety refereed journal papers and conference proceedings; and multiple book chapters on biomedical image processing, image post processing and distribution and optical interconnection networks published by John Wiley/IEEE Press, World Scientific, Elsevier and Academic Press. He is a guest co-editor for two separate special issues: one in Convergence of Digital and Optical Pattern Recognition and another in Optical Pattern Recognition for the Applied Optics in 2010 and 2003 respectively. He is also a guest co-editor for two special issues in Optical Computing Algorithms, Devices and Materials of the Optical Engineering in March 1999 and November 2001 respectively; and a co-editor of a special issue in Optical Computing Arithmetic and Systems of the Optics and Laser Technology in September 2000. He is a conference organizer in Optics and Photonics for Information Processing in SPIE's annual International Symposium On Optics and Photonics. He served as a lead conference chairman and organizer of an annual conference on Photonic Devices and Algorithms for Computing in the annual SPIE's International Symposium for 1999-2006. He is also a special session organizer in Biologically Inspired Computational Vision at WICCI'08, IJCNN'06, IJCNN'05 and CIRAS'03 respectively. He organized a workshop in Bio-inspired Vision in IJCNN'07. He organized a session on Biomedical Signal and Image Processing at the Asilomar'06. He serves on various Technical Committees (TC) in biomedical imaging/image processing, computational vision and computing, and pattern recognition related conferences on a regular basis. He also serves on TC for the Memphis Bioimaging Symposium.

He is currently serving as an associate editor for several journals including Optical Engineering, International Journal of Imaging, Open Cybernetics and Systemic Journal and International Journal of Tomography and Statistics.  He is a fellow of SPIE, a senior member of IEEE and a member of IEEE CIS and OSA.
