Dr. Kolb graduated with the first state exam in mathematics and physics from the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg in 1995. He received a Dr. rer. nat. degree in physics at the same University in 1999. As a postdoctoral research associate at the Technische Hochschule Darmstadt he continued to work on the interaction of heavy ion beams with plasmas until he switched into the higher education school service to pursue a teaching degree for mathematics and physics from 2000 till 2002. He maintains a strong interest in the didactic of these subjects. After his graduation with the second state exam, he accepted a position as postdoctoral research assistant at the Physical Electronics Research Institute at Old Dominion University, then transitioned to the Frank Reidy Research Center for Bioelectrics. In 2004, he was hired as Research Assistant Professor, and in 2006 accepted an Assistant Professorship in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Old Dominion University. His research at the Center for Bioelectrics relates to the effects of pulsed electric fields in biological, medical and environmental applications. The immediate physical response to an electric stimulus, in particular, the charging behaviour of cells and tissues, is currently the main focus of his work. Other research activities in which he is engaged include the generation, diagnostic and applications of gas discharge plasmas and the physics and technologies of pulsed power systems.
