Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering

Dr. Zia-ur Rahman

Associate Professor

Ph.D., University of Virginia. Multi-sensor fusion, image enhancement, compression and restoration, and non-linear image processing algorithms and optimization; remote sensing, image classification, and computer vision algorithms; neural networks.

Dr. Rahman got his A.B from Ripon Collge, Ripon, Wisconsin in 1984, where he double-majored in Physics and Mathematics. He went to graduate school at the University of Virginia, where he got an MS and a PhD in 1986, and 1989 respectively, both in Electrical Engineering. His primary area of specialization is digital signal processing, with an emphasis on digital image processing. His current research focuses on the application of digital image enhancement algorithms to increase situational awareness of a pilot in landing an aircraft in poor visibility conditions. He has had several grants from NASA for this research effort. Dr. Rahman comes to ODU from the College of William & Mary where he worked as research faculty with the department of Computer Science and the department of Applied Science for 10 years. He also worked as a contractor at the NASA Langley Research Center for 7 years before joining W&M.
