Vishnu Lakdawala honored by IEEE-DEIS

Associate Professor Vishnu Lakdawala, of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, was recently featured on the cover of the January/February 2007 issue of IEEE Electrical Insulation Magazine. In each of the past two years, 2005 and 2006, Dr.Lakdawala successfully organized and managed the conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena (CEIDP) as a general chair.  He was specially honored and recognized for his leadership at the last conference in October 2006, held in Kansas City, MO, by the President Elect of the IEEE-DEIS society Dr. Bill McDermid. An article on this conference was published in the January 2007 issue of Electrical Insulation magazine that pictured him on the cover receiving his certificate of appreciation. This recognition helps provide the department and college international visibility http://eng.odu.edu/ece/news/pdfs/DEISNewsLakdawala.pdf . He is also featured in an article published in the January/February 2006 issue for his leadership in the 2005 conference. This issue also includes photos of him both receiving and presenting awards for the conference http://eng.odu.edu/ece/news/pdfs/DEISNews061.pdf.

As the chair of the Education committee of the DEIS this past year Dr.Lakdawala has been instrumental in increasing the funding level for the DEIS Education fellowship from $ 15,000 to $ 25,000 a year to support graduate students working in the field of DEIS. He is working on increasing this amount more. As a side note, two of our graduate students received this fellowship of $ 5,000 each.

Since 1999, Dr. Lakdawala has served as the Chief Departmental Advisor for the ECE Department. Prior to that time, he served as the Graduate Program Director, 1990 - 1998. He has been active in leadership in both the department and the University with issues concerning undergraduate engineering students since joining the ECE Department in the fall of 1983.

Dr. Lakdawala still finds time to serve his community. He was recently reappointed as a commissioner representing Virginia Beach to the Hampton Roads Sanitation District Commission. He is now in his second term as commissioner.

Additionally, Dr. Lakdawala has been a pillar for the Hindu Temple of Hampton Roads, being instrumental in the building of the current facility in Chesapeake, Virginia. At present, he is actively involved in a mega event promoting the various aspects of India, Taste of India, to be held at the Ted Constant Convocation Center on April 22, 2007. Please plan to attend this event. For more information, please visit: http://tasteofindiahr.org
