Program in Bachelor of Science/Medical Doctor (BS/MD)

Engineering the ultimate machine: the human body

Old Dominion University has a joint program with Eastern Virginia Medical School designed to encourage outstanding and highly qualified students to receive a B.S. from Old Dominion University and a M.D. from Eastern Virginia Medical School. A student can choose any of the undergraduate programs available at Old Dominion University, including any in engineering or engineering technology.

The field of medicine is becoming increasingly more dependent on technology, as well as exploiting engineering and technology for its advancement. A medical professional, therefore, will have a clear advantage by having an educational background in engineering. Among numerous such examples is an orthopedic surgeon who understands the principles of mechanics, or a neurosurgeon who understands electrical fields, or a medical researcher who has experience in computer modeling of either tissue mechanics or cardiovascular flows. Students can apply after the completion of their freshman year at Old Dominion University.

An engineering or engineering technology student accepted into the BS/MD Program will be placed in a select group of students who will pursue their engineering education supplemented by unique medical and research experiences to prepare them for medical school. Contingent upon completion of the B.S. program a student accepted into the ODU/EVMS joint program in Medicine will be guaranteed admission to Eastern Virginia Medical School upon successful completion of requirements and graduation from Old Dominion University, thus reducing the academic pressure of preparing for entrance into medical school.

Eligibility and Selection of Students for BS/MD Program

Students who seek admission to the BSMD program must be a current student at Old Dominion University who has completed at least 24 semester hours at Old Dominion. This should include CHEM 115/116 and for the sophomore year CHEM 311/312.

Students seeking admission to the BSMD program must submit an application form for the BSMD Program.

Along with the application, the following must be submitted:

  1. At least three letters of evaluation, one from a non-science teacher and two from science/mathematics teachers. While letters from employers or acquaintances of the applicant will be accepted, they cannot be substituted for the letters from teachers and should be sent only if relevant. In addition to the student's GPA at Old Dominion, SAT scores and High School GPA on file in the office of the Registrar will be used in the selection of students for the program.
  2. SAT scores: A MINIMUM score of 1250 is required for admission to the program. This may be a combined total of the best scores if the SAT has been taken more than once.
  3. High school transcripts: applicants MUST rank in the top ten percent of their high school class, and have an overall GPA of at least 3.40.
  4. Students in the joint program must maintain an overall or Science GPA of 3.25 while at Old Dominion University to ensure admittance to Eastern Virginia Medical School upon graduation.
  5. A separate, nonrefundable application fee of $35 must be submitted along with the application.

Due to the highly competitive nature of this program, the above criteria are requirements for admission and may not be waived. The deadline for receiving all credentials is December 14 of the student's sophomore year at Old Dominion University.
