Title: U.S. Astronaut and Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Air Force

Personal Data: married with two children

Professional accomplishments:

  • Pilot of the 1997 Space Shuttle Atlantis mission to the Mir Space Station, which delivered Astronaut David Wolf to the Russian outpost and brought Mike Foale home after a four-month stay
  • Pilot of the Space Shuttle Endeavor crew that helped to repair the International Space Station Alpha in December 2000
  • Responsible for taking "beauty shot" photograph of the International Space Station. To do so, he had to undock the shuttle from the Alpha space station and perform a fly around, pause at just the right position and then pitch the shuttle's nose to the correct angle. That maneuver permitted a high-resolution, large-format camera mounted in the shuttle's cargo bay to take pictures of the space station.

It was my privilege to take the Old Dominion University Department of Engineering Management banner aloft with me on the Space Shuttle Atlantis in the fall of 1997. Your memento flew in Atlantis's crew compartment with the astronauts. As an alumnus of the University, I felt a special honor in carrying aloft the banner. The Department of Engineering Management's excellence in education gave me a great boost on my way to becoming an astronaut.
