STEP 1: APPLY TO MEET BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
- Deadline (for steps 1 and 2) is March 15th for Fall, September 15th for Spring
- Master's GPA: minimum of 3.5/4.0
- GRE general examination
- Two letters of recommendation
- Resume with at least three references
- At least two years of full-time industrial or government experience within the last five years
- TOEFL: Required for students whose first language is not English
- Advisor: The applicant is required to get in touch with one or more of the faculty members at the Department to identify a potential advisor(s) with background(s) relevant to the Doctoral project that the student intends to undertake. The student needs to discuss the project idea with the potential advisor(s) to secure an advisor who is willing to act as a main advisor to guide the student through the process. - A Project Concept Paper to the advisor in accordance with the Concept Paper Guidelines.
- Investigate whether the organization requires Nondisclosure Agreement (NDA) signed. NDA templates are available at the ODU's Office of Research and Research Foundation web sites.
A Departmental committee will review the application in two weeks from the deadline in Step 1.1 to decide if an applicant will be denied admission or can proceed to Step 2. The applicant will be notified of the committee's decision immediately.
STEP 2. INTERVIEW
The applicant must meet with the advisor within two to three weeks from the notification date in Step 1 to discuss the letter of commitment from the sponsoring organization. The letter should include:
1) Project scope and expectations
2) Proposed timeline
3) Data, information and personnel access committed by the sponsoring organization to the student's project.
4) A senior member of the organization to serve as an external committee member
5) NDA if required by the organization and/or ODU
STEP 3. ADMIT OR DENY
A Departmental Admission Committee, along with the involvement of the advisors, will review applications twice a year and make a decision to admit or deny applicants to the program. The deadlines for the review cycles are:
Fall: April 15th
Spring: October 15th
STEP 4. START THE PROGRAM
The student needs to work with the advisor on developing a plan of study that must be approved by the GPD before s/he can register for classes and the project.
