Graduate Materials Engineering Certificate Program

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Old Dominion University is offering a graduate Certificate Program in Materials Engineering.

The increasing interaction and interdependence among material properties, manufacture and design are making it necessary for engineers specializing/functioning in one area to be knowledgeable in the other two areas also. The Certificate Program in Materials Engineering is designed for working engineers who wish to continue their education beyond the bachelors degree; they now have the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of materials and acquire all additional qualification without making a formal commitment to a graduate degree program. However the credits earned in successfully completing the Certificate Program can be transferred to a Master's degree program in Mechanical Engineering later.

Course Requirements

Four courses have been designed to give a comprehensive view of materials. These are:

  1. Structure and Properties of Materials ME 426/526
  2. Thermomechanical Processing of Materials ME654
  3. Environmental Effects on Materials ME 424/524
  4. Failure Analysis and Prevention ME 652

Classroom instruction will be combined with laboratory experience. The courses will be offered as part of the Old Dominion University Weekend/Evening College, for the convenience of the participants.

ME 495 undergraduates and ME 654 for graduate students

COURSE INSTRUCTORS

Faculty from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, who are specialists in various aspects of materials engineering, will be teaching the courses.
