Research Areas
The primary role for NCSOSE at the university is fostering SoSE by acting as the academic arm for SoSE research, development, and application. This role is to be achieved through partnerships and relationships between academia, government, and industry. The execution of this role involves focused strategic elaboration around the following four areas:
- System of Systems Engineering discipline development - the university will take the lead in the definition of System of Systems Engineering as a distinct discipline. This includes development of the philosophy, theory, and methodologies that will define the uniqueness of SoSE.Inherent in this role is the development an execution of an applied research agenda, developed in conjunction with the community of practice.
- SoSE Knowledge development - the university will take the lead role to orchestrate the development, acquisition, and dissemination of SoSE knowledge through publication and scholarly activities to draw the research and practice communities together.Implicit in this role is active generation of the appropriate body of knowledge that constitutes SoSE.The body of knowledge must appreciate the "best practices" for the current activities being undertaken to conduct SoSE.
- Education and Training development - the university will take a lead role in the definition of education and training necessary to propagate SoSE to the engineering community of practice.
- System of Systems Engineering Tools and Methods - the university will act as a support agent to achievement of SoSE activities and development of SoSE expertise in applied settings. This includes the development and facilitation of a SoSE environment, tools, and methods capable of providing practitioners with a venue to effectively engage in SoSE activities.
