ODU faculty participated in the 2012 TRB's UTC Spotlight Conference on Sustainable Energy and Transportation.

International exchange

ODU faculty and students will actively collaborate with international partners on the TranLIVE theme. The current partners include:

  • Transit Oriented Development or TOD-based Sustainable City Transportation Research Center, Ajou University, South Korea.
  • Transportation Technology Research Group of TEMA - Mechanical Technology and Automation Center, University of Aveiro, Portugal.
  • INRETS-Institute of National Research in Transportation and Safety, France.
  • Various Universities in China.

Workshop for practitioners

The ODU team will organize a workshop related to the TranLIVE theme for the local city/state transportation planners and engineers. In addition, it will develop and deliver a webinar on the use of connected vehicle data in estimating traffic conditions to support eco-driving.

ODU will fully support a conference to be organized jointly with TranLIVE UTC partners on the topic (this activity is contingent on TranLIVE partners decision to put together a conference or workshop).

Promoting Diversity

The ODU team will support the Innovative Engineering Early Advantage Program (EEAP) and Women in Transportation (WTS) by providing scholarships and awards. The EEAP is part of the ODU's college of engineering's efforts to attract and retain female students in the traditionally male-dominated engineering field.  Fifteen competitively selected participants spend four weeks attending seminars and workshops at various ODU engineering facilities and partner companies as well as visiting and working in engineering research centers, including the Virginia Modeling, Analysis, and Simulation Center (VMASC).  Female engineering students have participated in the EEAP not only graduate at a higher rate than female engineers who do not participate, but also at a higher average rate than achieved by all students in the college.

ODU will participate in development of websites, social media sites, and e-community to be organized by UTC partners.

ODU TranLIVE website

ODU has developed a website that has information about the TranLIVE theme and the research projects undertaken by the team.

ODU participation in other web development activities.ODU is participating and contributing fully to the social media initiatives of the TranLIVE consortium partners. These include internet forums, listservs, weblogs, wikis, and videos or pictures.

Electronic newsletter

ODU will contribute to an electronic newsletter prepared by the TranLIVE UTC partners.

ODU will participate in a user group to be organized by TranLIVE UTC partners.

Scanning tour

ODU will support a scanning tour to be organized by the TranLIVE UTC partners.

Special issues on TranLIVE theme in refereed journals

The TranLIVE team is organizing special issues on environmental sustainability in the Journal of Intelligent Transportation Systems (5-year Impact Factor 1.179). Special issue 1 is titled: "Intelligent Transportation System Applications for the Environment and Energy Conservation" 2013. Special issue 2 is titled: "Cyber Transportation Systems and Connected Vehicle Research".

City of Virginia Beach test-bed

ODU has established a Transportation Applications Program, which includes an innovation test-bed with the City of Virginia Beach. The test-bed provides a natural and virtual environment for field testing of new transportation technologies (e.g., eco-technologies), modeling and simulation tools applications, and experimentation with innovative development strategies, e.g., testing smart growth concepts.
