Dr. Vijayan Asari
Professor
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering

Director: VLSI Systems Lab

Research areas: Signal processing, image processing, neural networks, pattern recognition, digital computer architectures and VLSI design.

Dr. Vijayan Asari is the Director of the Computational Intelligence and Machine Vision Laboratory (ODU Vision Lab) in the ECE department. Dr. Asari received the Bachelor's degree in electronics and communication engineering from the University of Kerala (College of Engineering, Trivandrum), India, in 1978, the M. Tech and Ph. D degrees in electrical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, in 1984 and 1994 respectively. Dr. Asari joined the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at ODU in August 2000. Prior to joining ODU, Dr. Asari worked as Assistant Professor in electronics and communications at TKM College of Engineering, University of Kerala, India, and as Research Fellow at National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He is also the Director of the VLSI Systems Laboratory at ODU. Dr. Asari is a Senior Member of the IEEE.

Dr. Mohammad A. Karim
Vice President for Research
Old Dominion University

Research areas: Optical computing, information processing, pattern/target recognition, night vision, displays, electro-optical systems, and sensors.

Dr. Mohammad A. Karim is Vice-President for Research of ODU. He received his BS Honors degree in physics from the University of Dacca, Bangladesh, in 1976, and MS in physics, MS in electrical engineering, and Ph.D. in electrical engineering degrees from the University of Alabama respectively in 1978, 1979, and 1981. He is author of 8 books, over 325 research papers, and 6 book chapters and has served as guest editor of 16 journal special issues. The list of his research sponsors include Office of Naval Research, National Science Foundation, US Air Force, Naval Research Laboratory, US Army, NASA, US Department of Education, Ohio Aerospace Institute, US Department of Defense, and Avionics Laboratory of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. He served as research mentor of over 55 MS/PhD students during his career. Prior to joining ODU, Dr. Karim served as Dean of Engineering at the City College of New York of the City University of New York.

Dr. Zia-ur Rahman
Associate Professor
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering

Research areas: Research Areas: Signal processing, image processing, computer vision, pattern recognition.

Dr. Zia-ur Rahman joined the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Old Dominion University as an Associate Professor in 2006. Before that he was a Research Associate Professor with the Department of Applied Science at the College of William & Mary. He received a B.A. in Physics from Ripon College in 1984, and an M.S. and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Virginia in 1986 and 1989, respectively. His graduate research focused on using neural networks and image processing techniques for motion detection and target tracking. Currently he is involved in conducting research in multi-dimensional signal processing, with an emphasis in data compression and image enhancement methods. He is a member of IEEE, SPIE and OSA.

Dr. Jessica R. Crouch
Assistant Professor
Department of Computer Science

Research areas: Biomedical image processing, computer vision, image registration, pattern recognition

Dr. Jessica Crouch joined the faculty of Old Dominion University's computer science department in the fall of 2005. Her research interests include tissue modeling, medical simulation, scientific data visualization, and numerical modeling methods. Prior to joining the ODU computer science department, Dr. Crouch worked as a Senior Research Scientist at the Virginia Modeling, Analysis, and Simulation Center at Old Dominion University. Dr. Crouch completed a postdoctoral fellowship in the Computer Integrated Surgical Systems and Technology Engineering Research Center at Johns Hopkins University. She received a Ph.D. in computer science in 2003 and a masters degree in computer science in 1999, both from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her bachelor's degree, also in computer science, is from the University of Richmond.

Dr. Yuzhong Shen
Assistant Professor
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering

Research areas: Visualization and computer graphics, signal and image processing, and modeling and simulation.

Dr. Yuzhong Shen received his B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from Fudan University, Shanghai, China, M.S. degree in Computer Engineering from Mississippi State University, Starkville, Mississippi, and Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Delaware, Newark, Delaware. He is also affiliated with Virginia Modeling, Analysis, and Simulation Center at Old Dominion University. Prior to joining the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Old Dominion University, Dr. Shen worked as an Engineer and a Senior Engineer with Weifang Hua-Guang Technologies, China, a Research Assistant with National Science Foundation Engineering Research Center for Computational Field Simulation at Mississippi State University, a Research Assistant with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Delaware, and a Senior Research Scientist with Virginia Modeling, Analysis, and Simulation Center at Old Dominion University.

Dr. Jiang Li
Assistant Professor
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering

Research areas: Machine learning, computer-aided medical diagnosis systems, medical signal/image processing, and neural networks.

Dr. Jiang Li received his B.S. degree in electrical engineering from Shanghai Jiaotong University, China, in 1992, the M.S. degree in automation from Tsinghua Univey, China, in 2000, and the Ph.D degree in electrical engineering from the University of Texas at Arlington, TX, in 2004. He worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the department of radiology, National Institutes of Health, from 2004 to 2006. Dr. Li joined ODU as an assistant professor in 2006. His research interests include machine learning, computer-aided medical diagnosis systems, medical signal/image processing, and neural network. His recent publications focus on computer-aided colonic polyp detection, machine learning and medical image processing. Dr. Li is a member of the IEEE and Sigma Xi.

Dr. M. Nazrul Islam
Research Scientist
Old Dominion University Research Foundation

Research areas: Digital image processing, optical and wireless communication, solid state devices.

Dr. M. Nazrul Islam received Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology in 1991 and 1994, respectively. He then earned his PhD degree from Muroran Institute of Technology, Japan in 1999. Dr. Islam joined the Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology in 1991 where he is now an Associate Professor (on leave). Prior to joining Old Dominion University, Dr. Islam worked as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of South Alabama and as a Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of West Florida. He authored and co-authored more than 80 publications in refereed journals and conference proceedings. He is a Member of the IEEE and SPIE.

Dr. Hau T. Ngo

Research areas: Digital computer architectures, VLSI system design, FPGA-based design, low power design, high performance video processing system design.

Dr. Hau Trung Ngo received Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Computer Engineering from Old Dominion University, Norfolk, Virginia in 2001 and 2003, respectively. He earned his Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Old Dominion University, Norfolk, Virginia in 2007. He is an Assistant Professor at the United States Naval Academy. His current research focuses on power-delay-area (PDA) efficient design methodologies for embedded and video processing systems. Dr. Ngo is a member of IEEE.

Dr. Hiroki Higa
Visiting Scientist
Associate Professor, University of the Ryukyus

Research areas: Medical electronics, human interface, image processing, FPGA-based design.

Dr. Hiroki Higa received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Electronics and Information Engineering from University of the Ryukyus, Japan, in 1992 and 1994, respectively. He earned his Ph.D. in Electronics Engineering from Tohoku University, Japan in 1997. He joined the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at University of the Ryukyus in 1997 where he is now an Associate Professor. He is presently a visiting scientist in Vision Lab at Old Dominion University. His research interests include developing medical instumentation, especially implantable functional electrical stimulation (FES) system and human interface for people with disabilities. He is a member of IEEE.

Dr. Norou Diawara
Assistant Professor
Mathematics and Statistics Department

Research areas: Multivariate Data Analysis, Image Modeling and Processing, Probability Theory and Estimation.

Dr. Norou Diawara is an Assistant Professor in the Mathematics and Statistics Department at ODU. He received his PhD in Mathematical Statistics at Auburn University in 2006, his Master in Sciences at the University of South Alabama, his Licence and Maitrise in Mathematics at Le Havre University in Le Havre, France, and his BA at University Cheick Anta Diop in Senegal. His research interests include Multivariate Data Analysis, Image Modeling and Processing, Probability Theory and Estimation. Consulting and teaching have always been part of his training. He uses mostly SAS, Minitab and R (S-Plus) statistical software for most of his work. Dr. Diawara is reviewer for Communications in Statistics, American Journal of Mathematical and Management Sciences, and the Journal of Combinatorics Information and System Sciences. He is a member of several professional associations such as the American Statistical Association and the Virginia Academy of Science.
